This mural was a challenge due to the detail high up on the wall over a staircase. I had to build a special scaffolding to bridge the staircase so that I could paint on the upper level of the wall. The subject of the mural was the home owner’s second home in Harbor Springs, Michigan set in a historical context. The home was a bed and breakfast for many years and prior to that was a historical landmark home. I traveled to Harbor Springs to take reference shots of both the town and the home in order to put the house into a “bird’s eye view” of the surrounding area. There was also a great deal of research required on the history of Harbor Springs in order to present the house in the correct time period. The house is in the lower right corner of the painting, but the ships dominate the scene.
The color of the mural is warm due to the use of the existing wall color under the mural. I left the color in order to blend the painting into the surrounding environment. The house where the mural is located is in Brighton, Michigan. This painting was done directly on the wall over a two week period.
